Adaera is right, for PS CS1
but for PS CS2 you hold ctrl, click the layers, then click the \"chain\" at the bottom of the layer thing.

Edit: in PS CS1 when you hold ctrl and click the layer it selected the contents... i am trying to figure out how to do that in PS CS2 >.>
Edit2: To Select the contents of a layer, hold ctrl and click the icon on the later thing
