In an interesting example of promotional programming, Discovery Kids Channel is featuring Elijah Wood, the voice of "Mumble," the Emperor penguin in the upcoming animated feature film, HAPPY FEET, as host of a live-action special about saving penguins, SAVING A SPECIES: THE GREAT PENGUIN RESCUE debuts on the Discovery Kids Channel on Nov. 19, 2006, at 6:30 pm, repeating again at 9:00 pm.

In one area of Africa, when an ecological disaster occurred, some people who are passionate about Emperor penguin came to their rescue. This Discovery Kids Channel special charts their all-out effort to save thousands of these creatures from ecological disaster. Wood, hosts the latest installment of Discovery Kids twice Emmy-nominated series of special SAVING A SPECIES.

When a giant oil spill off the coast of Cape Town reaches a colony of African penguins during their breeding season, these already-endangered birds face certain death. African penguins are the only penguin species that breed exclusively in Africa. Volunteers from around the world rush to their rescue, including animal care experts from SeaWorld San Diego, SeaWorld Orlando, the Baltimore Zoo, the Tri State Bird Rescue & Research, the IFAW (The International Fund for Animal Welfare) and SANCCOB (South African Foundation for the Conservation of Costal Birds). These volunteers set into motion the biggest evacuation and rescue attempt of wild birds in history.

It takes two volunteers about an hour to wash one penguin (two sudsings for each), and there are thousands of birds. The program is loaded with fascinating information about penguins.

In SAVING A SPECIES: THE GREAT PENGUIN RESCUE, kids learn that in addition to environmental threats, human activities such as hunting, coastal development, pollution and the over-harvesting of the kinds of fish that penguins eat can also threaten penguins' existence.

SAVING A SPECIES: THE GREAT PENGUIN RESCUE is produced for Discovery Kids by Spectrum Prods. Guy Nickerson is director and Elaine Pugliese is supervising producer. For Discovery Kids, Jim Rapsas is exec producer, and Marjorie Kaplan is the exec in charge of production.

The Discovery Kids Channel is a 24-hour digital channel that offers fun, engaging, high-quality, real-world programming for kids, building on Discovery's signature areas of science, adventure, exploration and natural history as well as a genre just for kids, real-world narrative and its signature animation, RealToons. Each Discovery Kids show gives kids another perspective on the world in which they live and the possibilities available to them.

Discovery Kids is a very good channel, and hopefully with continued educational programming like this, we'll see a generation of kids growing up to be more environmentally conscious than the previous generations who contributed to many of the crises we are now facing.

We don't get DKids here. Discovery, yes... but for some reason they classify DKids as "premium" and costs extra per month.
You'd think they would have it as a standard channel, and charge a premium for the brain-rot channels instead.

yeah, we don't get discovery kids either; we used to, but then we downgraded from digital cable lol.

It's a premium channel here as well, it just happens to be included with the group of channels I have. As for the brain-rot channels, I couldn't agree with you more. There are quite a few channels I would prefer to substitute with quality programming than be stuck with no-mind channels we don't watch.

Did you know that I can get 6 Bible-Thumper channels included in ALL cable packages, from Digital Premium to basic cable... but I had to pay the premium price for Nick, Nick2, Discovery, History, National Geographic, and TLC?
Where's the logic in that?

History, regular Discovery and TLC are in our basic cable packages.
