Guild Wars players invited to play in exclusive Player-versus-Player event as Beta testing launches for next Guild Wars Campaign

Tuesday 18 July 2006, Brighton, UK/... ArenaNet?, developer of the world?s leading subscription-free online role playing games Guild Wars? and Guild Wars Factions?, and NCsoft? Europe, the world?s leading developer and publisher of online computer games, announce today the title of the next game in the award-winning franchise, Guild Wars Nightfall?. Further, Guild Wars Nightfall has entered the beta testing stage and Guild Wars players worldwide are invited to participate in an exclusive, first-look player-versus-player (PvP) event, July 28 ? July 31, 2006.

During the PvP Preview Event, both Guild Wars Prophecies and Guild Wars Factions players will get a first look at Guild Wars Nightfall, and will be able to try out the two new professions being introduced in the game; the Dervish, a scythe-wielding holy warrior, and the Paragon, guardian angel of the Elonian people. In addition to testing out the new professions and arenas, players will also be able to compete for items that will be exchangeable for a variety of rewards throughout the weekend event.

The Guild Wars Nightfall PvP Preview event will kick off on Friday, July 28 at 08:00 BST / 09:00 CET and will continue through Monday, July 31 to 07:59 BST / 08:59 CET.

Guild Wars, an instant bestseller worldwide upon its release in April 2005, and Guild Wars Factions, the number one game in both North America and Europe earlier this year, are global online role playing games. Guild Wars Nightfall will continue the tradition of inviting players to immerse themselves in an epic storyline centered in a vibrant fantasy setting, build personalised characters, compete in head-to-head battles with players from around the world, and find adventure in missions and quests, in a Guild Wars game unlike any player have seen before.

Guild Wars Nightfall Character Feature:

The Paragon:

The Paragon is a brilliant battle commander who wields a shield and throwing spears, using a
variety of verbal chants and shouts to provide temporary empowering boosts to themselves and
their allies. Through their insight, Paragons can also help allies resist hexes and conditions. The
Paragon's armor is ornate and usually made of a mixture of metal and leather inset with ivory,
mother of pearl, and other semiprecious materials. Paragon armor has an angelic motif, usually in
the form of wings engraved onto the metal plates.
Paragons are the guardian angels of the Elonian people, chosen by the gods to serve as
emissaries among mortals and serve as that land's champions against malevolent threats. Each
has experienced an event in their early lives where they should have died, but did not. They
ascribe their survival to the gods themselves, and dedicate their lives as the gods' servants in the
mortal world.

The Dervish:

Dervishes are scythe-wielding holy warriors who can attack multiple enemies at once. Because
the broad sweep of a swinging scythe can strike multiple foes at once, the Dervish seeks the very
heart of a battle. The Dervish will calmly and intently cast spells on themselves even while
surrounded by foes, and suddenly unleash a flurry of devastating, whirling, scythe attacks. The
Dervish has a variety of combat-related enchantments and inherent healing and protection
abilities. Their greatest power, however, is that of transformation. The Dervish, when roused, may
channel divine powers and change their form to temporarily become the physical embodiment of
a god.
The Dervish's attire is a testament to the dual nature of the Dervish as both a priest and a warrior.
They wear a robe to show their faith in the divine, bracers to demonstrate their prowess in
combat, and a hood to mark their humility before the gods. This garb provides limited armor, but
the Dervish is shielded in battle by their agility and by the enchantments that they cast upon
themselves. These enchantments make them resistant to injury, turn aside the attacks of their
foes, and lend elemental power to their attacks.

Upcoming PVP Event Preview:
For current Guild Wars players who wish to test out these exciting new professions, we invite you
to join us on the weekend of July 28th to July 30th for our Guild Wars Nightfall PvP Preview Event!
During this time, both Guild Wars Prophecies and Guild Wars Factions owners will be able to
create new PvP characters using the upcoming Dervish and Paragon professions, and will be
able to test out both classes? exciting new skills in both beta-exclusive preview arenas and current
battle arenas. For more information regarding this special event, be sure to visit

It will be a stand alone chapter, the same as Factions. You will be able to play it either independently or linked to Chapters 1 and 2 (Prophecies and Factions).

lol....yeah kind of a toss-up there.

I haven't gotten that far into Factions yet, because I am still trying to uncover all of the map in Prophecies (only another 8% to go for the title).

I will most likely buy GW:N when it comes out, which will probably be sometime before Christmas if they hold to their 6 month release schedule.

I hope there will be lots of new PVE explorable areas and ways to win more attribute points in Nightfall.

I will have a look at it; I'm one of those who prefers PVE over PVP so in a way it bugs me that we're being dragged into PVP if we want to check out the new professions coming in Nightfall-it would've been nice if we were also given a nice preview map area to PVE in as well - but I guess a GvG is a good way to die ROFL

Alrighty...I tried out the Dervish characters (seeing as that was the demo female they offered).

I think the skirts and the shoes are ugly, as are the headpieces (which is why they don't show on my characters). The colours on the Dunewalker's costume are way too bright. As for the skills, they read like they're pretty cool, but the ones we got to play with were incredibly slow recharging. I do like the Transform skill, where the character could transform into Melandru.

Obviously it's very hard to get a really good feel for a new character or new skills when everything is so limited in a beta preview, but from taking a look at the Paragon skills on Mike's account, I would probably be more inclined to play that profession rather than the Dervish.

What do the rest of you think (for those who have tried the preview)

Yes, it's highly powered but the skills they have in the pre-made take so long to recharge, and of course the only skills unlocked for a custom char are my mesmer skills.

I might try a Paragon tonight, even though we're limited to a male character...ick. *runs*

72mb downloadable wmv Nightfall cinematic trailer

http://www.guildwars.com/gallery/video/

I've watched it...awesome music and scenery, it doesn't give away any of the storyline, but the new monsters look very very cool. There's some kind of new birdie baddie (or at least a baddie with wings) and a few other new and interesting creatures.

Makes me wish that Chapter 3 was much closer to release than it is.

I don't think they are rushing things; Anet has a production schedule of a new chapter every six months. Factions was very late, which is why we were given Furnace of Sorrow in Prophecies. Apparently the dev team working on Nightfall is most of the dev team from Prophecies. There are at least two GW dev teams, so if they work on odd or even chapters, they should be able to hold to production. I've noticed alot of object cheating in Factions, so they've cut down on the actual number of unique things and places they are making and just using them at different angles and in some cases with different skins-I'm sure it saves them alot of time and as long as it doesn't effect game play I don't care that they do it.

I just hope that we get the same preview privileges at PAX as they are getting at GC in Leipzig:
NCsoft Europe will also treat visitors on the show floor to the first look of their upcoming title Guild Wars Nightfall™, the next campaign in the international best-selling Guild Wars series. Guild Wars Nightfall takes place on the continent of Elona, Land of the Golden Sun, which has fallen under the shadow of an evil, outcast god. The people of Elona will need more than a hero to save them, they will need a hero to lead them ... for nightfall is at hand.
As Tami said, they aren't rushing things at all even if it seems like it. Developer companies usually have a couple different teams working on one single game so they can do what we're getting with Guild Wars /smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' /> Lovely thing, really /biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' /> I posted some screenshots from the video in another thread btw.

Okay...so if Nightfall takes place on the continent of Elona, does this mean they are going to do a continent like Europe/Asia where it's all one land mass with an invisible dividing line? Have we already been playing on the continent of Elona with the desert maps? Anet isn't making this easy to figure out at all lol

Note: this topic got its posts put in the wrong order when we merged the forums. The second post is the correct topic-start.

yeah, this started out as a reply in a blog post... i waffled on /blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

Topic: possible secondary professions for the Dervish. anyone feel like doing Paragon? i prolly will tomorrow /smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

Hmm... secondary, ranger would go well if you used the skill "Apply Poison" cause the D attacks target foe, and two adjacent on a normal attack (i believe) so a good spread of poison, plus the D has spin attacks.

Maybe a sin secondary? again for the AoE, using Sharpen Daggers... could work, but wont for long, unless you had a Barbed mod on it.

Lets see; warrior secondary you could use some shouts for extra armor, or some strength based attacks, which with the D's high hit strength (7-41 i believe) could deal some serious damage.

monk: standard heal backup

rt: see monk /blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

mesmer: echo-damage dealer?

or you could use Paragon, and their erm.. chants?

edit: realised last night that you wont be able to use sin or rit as a secondary, as they wont be available for nightfall /blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

I will most likely make a Paragon, mainly because I prefer casters over melee chars. I'm not sure if I'll make a P/E, a P/Mo or a P/Me, but I think any of those combinations have the potential to be either deadly spikers or very powerful healers. I'll most like miss a good chunk of Friday night play as I believe there is a game dev networking night that evening, but you can bet I'll make up for it Saturday/Sunday /blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

Guild Wars Nightfall Debuted To Mass Acclaim and Record-Breaking Numbers in Global Event Last Weekend
Nearly 500,000 Fans Played more than Four Million Hours in Landmark Gaming Event

Thursday 5th October/...With the October 27, 2006 release of Guild Wars? Nightfall? drawing close, nearly half a million players around the world got their first taste of one of the year's most-anticipated games in last weekend's World Preview Event. Players spent an average of 8.5 hours each over the course of the weekend, announced ArenaNet?, developer of the award-winning Guild Wars franchise, amassing more than four million total hours of game play. This weekend's numbers shattered the previous attendance record of three million hours set during the Guild Wars Factions? preview event earlier this year, as fans immersed themselves in the new Guild Wars Nightfall continent of Elona, sampling the game's new features, mechanics, and missions.

"We knew we had struck a chord with our players as soon as the Nightfall World Preview Event got underway," said Mike O'Brien, co-founder of ArenaNet. "Their response has been amazingly positive to everything in the game; especially the Heroes." Heroes are a new feature of Guild Wars Nightfall. They are non-player characters integral to the storyline that players can customize and control throughout the game. "Heroes gain experience, follow player direction in battle, and can be equipped with skills, weapons, and even secondary professions of the player's choice, said O'Brien. "They are a wildly popular component to this game that we've spent significant time developing, and we're thrilled our fans have responded to it the way they have."

Guild Wars, an instant bestseller in North America and Europe upon its release in April 2005, and Guild Wars Factions, the number one game in both North America and Europe earlier this year, are global online role playing games. In Guild Wars Nightfall you?ll explore opulent cities, brave savage coasts, delve deep into ancient monuments, and find your way across poisonous deserts as you determine the fate of the new Realm of Elona. The Guild Wars Nightfall Prerelease Bonus Pack is available in retail stores worldwide now, and the Guild Wars Nightfall Standard Edition and Guild Wars Nightfall Collector?s Edition will be released worldwide on 27th October, 2006.
