The Perfect Website

Post by Josh »

Hey,
had this thought about 4AM this morning; What would be the perfect website in your opinion? As for me, my perfect website would bring all my RSS Feeds, Technology News, My bookmarks, links to my favorite websites, new mail messages, and a nice search function for Google /blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

So what\'s yours? Let\'s hear it /biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' /> No existing websites /blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

It would be great if said website would filter out all of the \"fluffy stuff\" in news stories or knowledge articles and just present the pertinent facts - pointform news stories would be fine with me. Plus a fast loading site, that would be nifty. The site would have to have a huge bookmark db to list all of my bookmarks LOL... 0.o

\"my perfect website would bring all my RSS Feeds, Technology News, My bookmarks, links to my favorite websites, new mail messages, and a nice search function for Google\"

so basically the google customisable homepage...

it does RSS feeds (as topics), it does tech news, you can add bookmarks and favourites, it can do gmail (and others via plugins) and it has google search... heh

No...not Google IG. Google still lacks things that I would want. It doesn\'t do bookmarks (Sure, it does for like an external site. That\'s no fun.), it doesn\'t do my favorite links, and it\'s design is simple, yet sort of ugly. And did you read the full first post and the posts after that? \"No existing websites\"...same goes to you shane /blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

yes i did read it but we were just noting what you asked for is just basically a slightly modded google IG /blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

plus as for the no existing websites bit... i dont think either of us said that an existing website was \"our\" idea of a perfect website /blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

personally i think there is no such thing as perfection... as what i may find useful at this second may not be what i need in say... a weeks time /blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' /> so trying to work out a perfect site makes no sense to me.

I suppose the closest i can come to a perfect website would be for a site to encompass all new technologies... XHTML framework, CSS3 style, DOM behaviour, javascript with AJAX embedding, XML for serverside. For that site to be designed to ALL web standards (Design Standards, Accessibility, Usability, etc) EG: WAI, 508, WCAG. For it to be small in size, fast, contain no advertising, have only good content and for it to not break conventions or not work in ANY browser, text or graphical.

Yes that is what a perfect website would probably be... however it is impossible to meet all of the guidelines for web standards (literally it cant be done as some contradict each other), it is impossible to meet usability and accessibility and design principles for the same reason. And a downside of it using good modern technologies would be the lack of support by all browsers. So as I said before... perfection is impossible.

Alex, you make good points, however that\'d mean someone could make a website adhering to endless guidelines... yet only have the content \"HI\" and it\'d be your perfect website?

c\'mon, what content do you want? =P

I\'m not looking at a literal sense here. I mean a perfect website with content...not all this design usability color theory ajax infested css3 powered website.

Now before anyone does, when I say perfect content, don\'t go saying \"Not every bit of content isn\'t going to have typos\". Sheesh..literal people *smacks yall*

i dont think there is any content that would really make me sit up and go WOW, mabie im just a shallow developer but i look at websites for their beauty (both external on the site look and internal from the coding point of view), i mean a website already exists for pratically everything already /blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

i guess the site I find most useful is probably IMDB, i love movies and Amazons database (IMDB) is the best source on movies.

Okay. Here we go.

My website would be the coolest website in the world. It would be a bright blue background with bright red text and would have content such as "w31com3 j03 j00 ar3 teh aw3s0m3".
Yes that would be prefect.
And it would be infested with the stupidest flash games in the world. And it would use a webcam and see my boss coming and switch my perfect website to some pie chart or something. Then it would have technology news that made no sense or meaning to anyone...cause those are the best kinds of tech news. such as "the top ten worst inventions ever made" yes...perfection CAN be acheaved...losers

For me the perfect website is quite simple really. Its basicaly what any website should do; be nice and easy to navigate, well laid out, concise, easy on the eye and deliver its chosen topic or service in a way thats easy to understand/use. Above all of that, I think it should put the user first, just in the way Killagraphix does with friendly staff and users with a wide range of skill and common interests. I think a good example of what I mean is www.bbc.co.uk Which has a huge wealth of information and I mean huge, is kept upto date to the minute, has huge archives of programes the BBC produce in both radio and TV and is nice and easy to use, and one I use everyday.
