mIRC Code/Script: Lame or our Hero?

Post by Josh »

Okay, frist I would like to put up a quote.
yes I want to know everything you know except mIRC.... mIRC is .... well ... it\'s lame <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... senile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'(truck)\' />[post="27380"]<{POST_SNAPBACK}>[/post]
Please don\'t take offense to me using this as an example, Kentie.

Now I know a lot of us here who are very advanced in numerous programming languages such as Visual Basic, PHP, etc. all started out on mIRC back in the MSN Chat days. In my own honest opinion I have to give my respects to Khaled for creating the mIRC script/code syntax because without it I would have been lost when it comes to PHP and Visual Basic. Even C++! I think mIRC\'s coding syntax has pushed me up the latter to where I am today; On top of the building of programming. mIRC seems like it prepared me for the upcoming languages I was going to learn. Does this make it lame? In my opinion, no. In other\'s opinion? Let\'s find out.

I\'d really like to get this into a pretty deep debate. No 3 word posts please. <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... /stare.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'(stare)\' /> So, let\'s start this debate of whether mIRC coding/scripting is pointless or lame to learn.

Its just another \"language\" to learn, alot of people claim its a \"kiddie language.\" I dont consider it as a \"true\" coding language but its still coding, like josh said, have to get props to Khaled for making mIRC. also like josh said mirc is somewhat like other languages, like php. Either way its something to learn, something you can build off, so to awnser josh\'s question mIRC scripting/coding isnt lame.

I think mirc coding is the stepping stone to learning other languages. I learned Mirc Coding, like josh said, way back in the msn chat days. That was 3 years ago. In this last year of school, i took c++. I found that c++ is just a more complicated version of mirc coding. But mirc coding made it easier to learn languages such as c++. Thats my opinion.

I definatly (typo?) dont think that mIRC is lame. It's where I started out, and it will probably help me alot in the future when learning other languages or just understanding code when I need to edit something...
I think Khaled has made a truly great job on it and if it wasnt focused on IRC it would be a great all-round language, perhaps for beginners anyway. I'd say learning mIRC scripting is a great thing to do if you are interested in programming/scripting/coding/whatever becouse it can be used to understand alot of other languages...

I wonder how many times I repeated myself there <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... >/blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

I started learning how to code with mIRC a few years ago. It was the first "language" I learned on the internet. It taught me about code structure, variables, functions (or aliases), etc. Once I was fluent in mIRC I felt a little constricted, so I decided to learn HTML. Once I learned that, I started learning Visual Basic 6 (which was made easier because I already knew about if statements, while loops, etc.) I later started to learn basic C++ and PHP. I would have to say without mIRC I wouldn't be where I am today.
mIRC owns.
mIRC was also my first "language" it taught me how to use varriables(spelled wrong)
and structure(probobly also spelled wrong) It also gave me the thing i needed the most...confedence(also spelled wrong) mIRC got me off in the right additude to expand my area in coding. Now i can take on new codes and learn the bassics in an hour to a day. So i dont think mIRC is lame

I would love to change the world, but they won't give me the source code =(

variables, structure and confidence <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... >/blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

mIRC was my first language too. It's a good starting language because it's really basic. Basically an on text event is on *:TEXT:*roar*:*:/say meow. mIRC is a good starting point and it helps you learn how the code is supposed to be laid out like in if statements and so on.

mIRC is LAME! <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... >/blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' /> It's the only coding language that dose not pay (Ok, Khaled & some black hats have made money off it <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... igwink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' /> ). Damn MSN p... bots.

I had fun working with mIRC scripting. In that is the point of learning to write it. Many think mIRC as a stepping stone for other more powrfull scripts. But in it's self, mIRc is very powerfull script. It dose plenty with in it's limmets. <- not a kiddy script IMHO

So with my closeing thoughts. mIRC is LAME! please don't learn it. Don't dare to have fun useing it. Yeah <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... iggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' /> I see you looking at that "Script Editer Icon" Don't dare to click. it's an evel Icon once you click it your whole life will change. You will become a LAME mIRC scripter SLAPPING every one with a trout.

Thanks, Trinity, I forgot to find that and put it in the original post. I was planning on doing it though <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... >/blum.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

well i also started off with mIRC Scripting. It does help when you are trying to use vars. BUT, it can set you back when you are trying to grasp a new language such a C++ or VB. mIRC Scripting is plainly too easy, and when you set your sites higher to a real language, you can have some troubles. so i say start with VB, then go to something like delphi or C++. <img src=\'http://www.killanet.net/forum3/public/s ... /dance.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'(dance2)\' />

Seeing as I didn't start from mIRC at all (I started on a commodore 64 and then progressed to assembly, then C++, then backpeddled to some Visual Basics and QBASIC for fun), it's hard for me to really say that it makes life easier to learn other language. While the mIRC syntax is somewhat similar to C++ it still leaves some things idling in the mind and creates bad habits in C++ code (so I've seen anyways). That doesn't mean it's impossible to get rid of those habits, just that at first mIRC scripters will have some minor problems readjusting their mindset to C++. I'm sure it does help learn other languages. The syntax for most languages are somewhat similar (don't get me started on lower level programming - as it makes no sense to anyone but those who know the language itself). mIRC scripting will always be considered "kiddie" - but in a way, it is. Imagine mIRC script as training wheels for C++ and other languages; slightly kiddie there by itself. No problem though, you grow up and get over it (or just turn out to be some 30-something saying "LOLZ U SUK NOOB CUZ YOU DUN NO VARS N SOCKETS PROBERLY LOLOLOLOLZ"....). I pity those who started mIRC script after they were in their mid (to late) 20's as it seems a bit scary to imagine who a noob mIRC scripter would act (like a 13 year old). Regardless, I'm kind of both ways about mIRC scripting. Some aspects make it lame (ex: bad habits) and some make it useful (ex: learning some things about similar syntax languages).

I wouldn\'t exactly say I\'d pity those who start mIRC scripting in their 20\'s. They don\'t HAVE to go to places like mircscripts.org and learn the rudeness and kidish replies that everyone does over there. If I remember right, TG007 had zero tollerance for that kind of crap and it was a great learning enviroment for new scripters.
