Online U.S. job postings grew to their highest level in over a year in November with more workers needed to support retail orders for the holiday shopping season, a survey published on Thursday showed.

Monster's Employment Index rose to 117 in November from 114 in October. The index stood at 88 in November, 2003.

The findings from online employment service Monster Worldwide were released the day before the government publishes November payrolls data, the most closely tracked data on national labor conditions.

A Reuters survey of 31 economists projected an average increase of 180,000 nonfarm payrolls in November, down from an increase of 337,000 in October. The October increase came as a surprise to analysts, who generally had been expecting a much lower number.

In the Monster survey, industries that saw an increase in online job availability included professional, scientific and technical services and utilities.

Industries that remained essentially unchanged included manufacturing, construction and public administration.

Management of companies and enterprises, accommodation and food services, and finance and insurance all experienced varying degrees of declines in online job availability, Monster said.
