Desktop search clients have been in the news recently with Google releasing a beta version of its new technology. The desktop search market is relatively small, but given the inadaquecies of Microsoft's windows-explorer search client, there is a lot of potential.

In the paper today, I read about a product named Copernic Desktop Client, which is a search client. It uses entirely different methods to google's client, and according to the article it is a lot better. There have been quite a few questions about whether google's approach to treating Desktop Searching like Web Searching would work or not.

So I thought that I'd give Copernic a try, and I was very impressed. The first thing Copernic does is index all your files, including emails for MUCH quicker searching. After this (can take from 10-60+ mins depending on how much you want to index and what file types), you can start searching. Copernic can search inside documents, emails and even email attachments such as .PDF files! Copernic also comes with a toolbar that attaches to the windows startbar, and works a lot like the google toolbar, except that not only can it search the web but it can search your computer as well.

I recommend that everyone at least have a look at Copernic, I think that you will be very impressed. I know that I will need it at least once a day when I'm looking for an mp3, php file or email.
