Yahoo! News is reporting that Google has introduced new software so powerful that today it even took them by surprise. Earlier this week Google introduced something they call the Web Accelerator. Today at 6:55 pm eastern Google had so many users utilizing this web accelerator that they actually time warped into the future and therefore were outrunning the World Wide Web by a matter of minutes. This resulted in many users encountering error messages when trying to access web pages that haven’t even been created yet.
In related news: One North Carolina man reports reaching the end of the internet in only three days after installing the Google Web Accelerator.

The web is abuzz with talk of the pros and cons of the new Google Web Accelerator. Mostly the con, and the issue is privacy. I want to let you in on an immediate problem you must understand.

This morning, the Inside Google blog published in its excellent article, Much Controversy of Web Accelerator, a very worrisome bug that is a byproduct of GWA-getting logged into some web sites as someone else! Or put in a more frightening way, others can see pages of YOURS as if they were logged in as you.

An excerpt:

[i]\"See, Google isn\'t serving web pages faster, its serving other people\'s versions of the web page faster. What does that mean? Try using Web Accelerator on a forum site, one with lots of geeks who love Google and probably already have Web Accelerator installed. Why, if you\'re lucky, you\'ll be logged in as someone else, as the folks at [url=\"http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1550469\"][u]somethingawful.com[/u][/url] discovered.

The posters in that forum discovered that most of the times they refreshed the page, they were logged in as a different person, seeing their friend\'s control panel for the forums.

They were even kind enough to provide screenshots.\" [/i]

[b]Web Accelerator And Your 404 Page[/b]

Google Web Accelerator\'s most useful function is that it, in theory, removes the Slashdot effect where you get a 404 \"Page Not Found\" error when visiting an overburdened site. But what happens when you type in an address that doesn\'t exist?

In Firefox, this happens:

Google\'s Web Accelerator serves up that page instead of a 404. This according to [url=\"http://www.benjaminadam.com/archives/2005/05/05/bad-google-web-accelerator-bad\"][u]Benjamin Adam[/u][/url], who reminds us of when Verisign changed the 404 and caught hell for it. Of course, Google is different, because you choose to have it this way. The Google 404 page, of course, also has a link to a Google search.

I\'m kind of surprised they don\'t put the search results on the page.

The 404 page has a reason for existing in Firefox, as commenter Justin P. [url=\"http://www.benjaminadam.com/archives/2005/05/05/bad-google-web-accelerator-bad#comment-795\"][u]explains[/u][/url]:

The reason that this only happens in Firefox is probably because IE serves up that little local document that says host not found. Firefox on the other hand presents an annoying pop-up window. Maybe Google\'s thought is to get rid of that annoying pop-up?
